Shopping Malls in Bangkok
Bangkok's modern, multi-storey shopping malls are a shopaholic's paradise. From the legendary MBK, to the sophisticated Emporium, trendy Siam Discovery and Central World Plaza, and unashamedly upscale Siam Paragon, Bangkok accommodates every taste, pocket and style.
Here’s where to find the city's finest fashion stores, global brands, book shops, speciality stores, accessories stands and all kinds of luxury designer lifestyle goods. Not to mention some amazing food courts selling upscale street food and lots of restaurants and day spas.
Siam Paragon is a magnet for savvy shoppers and everyone wanting to share in one of fashionable Bangkokians favourite part times: cruising the mall. Here you will find a host of international high-end fashion brands, Southeast Asia’s largest aquarium, a 16-screen Cineplex, and a comprehensive selection of world cuisine. Located prominently in front of Siam BTS Skytrain station, the mall contains over 250 shops. Fortunately, the layout is logical and compact. On offer are mainly luxury items for well-heeled Thais and international visitors with cash to spare.
CentralWorld mega-shopping complex and its restaurant-night life enclave, Groove, offers a truly exciting shopping experience featuring brand name clothing boutiques, funky fashion, high-tech gadgets, bookshops and designer furniture, along with imported groceries, banks, beauty salons, gourmet eateries and an ice-skating rink. With so many tantalising options to explore, you can easily spend half a day here without realising it. The largest mall in Thailand and among the biggest in the world, it is certainly a top contender for those seeking a little retail therapy. Nearest stations are BTS Siam and Chit Lom.
Possibly Bangkok's most legendary shopping mall, MBK Center is popular with bargain-hunting tourists and locals alike. Its eight floors are crammed with 2,000 shops selling clothing, fashion accessories, handbags, leather products, luggage, furniture, mobile phones, electrical appliances, cameras, stationery and DVDs, among others. Everyday MBK Center is a beehive of activity but on weekends it seems as if half of Bangkok has converged there. It’s not as glitzy as nearby rivals but the range of goods arranged across a landscape of 89,00 square metres is simply mind boggling and you can save a few baht too.
Siam Discovery’s sophisticated concept of how to presents items on display offers an experience unlike any other in Thailand’s mall-mad capital. A top to toe refurbishment and relaunch in 2016 sees the ground floor once again populated by chic boutiques and such anchor stores as Issey Miyake, Diesel and Comme des Garcons. However, as you head to higher floors, the shops disappear and in their place the goods are laid out as they might be in someone’s home. The trend has been popular in Japan and Korea for a while but Siam Discovery is the first to pick up on it in Bangkok. Higher still are regular Loft and Habitat stores, fashion jewellery and homeware concept stores. The 6th floor is dedicated to Bangkok’s very own Madame Tussauds Waxwork Museum.
Platinum Fashion Mall
Located in the heart of Pratunam, the wholesale shopping area of central Bangkok where mostly small-time traders from all over the world come to stock their shops back home, Platinum Fashion Mall is a trendy air-conditioned mall specializing in wholesale fashions and accessories, although you are just as likely to bump into local fashionistas restocking their personal wardrobes. Covering four floors, Platinum is packed with around 1,300 shops. Bargaining is advised and those who buy in bulk will always save more. You can walk there in 10 minutes from either Ratchathewi or Chidlom BTS Skytrain.
